Rhodiola as an adaptogenic herb

Rhodiola rosea, also known as roseroot, arctic root, or golden root, is a succulent plant that grows in regions including Iceland, Greenland, Siberia, and China. Rhodiola rosea has been used for over 2,000 years as an herbal remedy for various health conditions. Rhodiola as a supplement is prepared from the fresh rhizome and roots of the plant. Rhodiola is one of the best-known adaptogens, and various health-supporting properties are attributed to its extract. For instance, rhodiola is beneficial for fatigue*, and it can help support the nervous system*.

Adaptogens and stress

Rhodiola (extract) is an adaptogen, a botanical herb that provides better adjustment (adaptation) and greater resilience during changing circumstances. Adaptogens are herbs that help the body find balance; this is known as homeostasis, which means increasing the ability of living organisms to regulate their internal environment within certain limits, despite fluctuations or threats in external conditions. Examples include blood pressure, blood pH levels, temperature, and blood sugar levels.

Rhodiola as a supplement

Rhodiola as a supplement is generally safe for use for up to 3 months. However, if Rhodiola is intentionally used to constantly raise the bar, there is a risk of burnout. It is therefore important to work on the root cause of your stress in the meantime and use Rhodiola as a support tool for this.

In a 2011 report on Rhodiola rosea, the European Medicines Agency concluded that (standardized) rhodiola extract is safe.

Never combine natural remedies with regular antidepressants on your own initiative, as this is not without risk. Seek professional advice from a pharmacist regarding interactions if you wish to combine Rhodiola with your regular medication, such as sleep medication or antidepressants.

It is not recommended to use Rhodiola during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
